BENGALURU: The IT capital of India missed its chance to be part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 100 smart cities project because of the population yardstick. Now, the city can get decorated by at least three smart cities around it if Karnataka has its way.
TOI has learnt that the Siddaramaiah government has proposed to the Centre names of 11 cities for the smart cities project. Devanahalli, Ramanagaram and Tumakuru have been picked up in the satellite towns category.
Kalaburagi, Hubballi-Dharwad, Mysuru, Belagavi and Mangaluru figure in the class of cities in the population range of 1-4 million people. The names of Udupi, Hospet and Vijayapura have been proposed under the category of heritage towns.
The Union government's guidelines issued in September said cities with a population of 1-4 million would be most appropriate to be developed as smart cities. Urban development minister Vinay Kumar Sorake told TOI they could not pick Bengaluru as its population has crossed 96 lakh as per the 2011 census.
