SAVING KAMBALA

The fact that Kambala has never been a sport backed by commercial interests, and that it is a traditional rural sport organized with religious background. This is a sport with which people from rural places here have an emotional bond, needs to be considered even before a ban is called for such events…

Keeping the sentiments of people and their cultural importance a meeting of people's representatives from coastal Karnataka was convened at Vidhan Soudha on Thursday November 20, to discuss this issue, presided over by law minister, T B Jayachandra, along with Abhaychandra Jain, Ramanath Rai, officials of law and animal husbandry department were present at this meeting.

The annual Buffalo Race held traditionally in coastal Karnataka, a folklore sport that has been part and parcel of rural life here, a question of age old tradition performed in good faith to thank the almighty who has kept their animal in good health.

The new directive along with Jallikattu of Tamilnadu and other sporting activity involving animals to be banned… needs serious consideration and impetus which is focused on saving and preserving deep rooted culture and traditions while evolving in to a modern society.
